Sticking to the Basics!

Now that your hair is all natural doesn't mean that it is a good idea to forget the tender love and care you gave to your relaxed hair. For example when your hair is tangled and in knots do you pull it vigorously?

Pulling which can sometimes result to breaking is not what most women with permed hair do. Why do it now that you are natural?

Treat your hair with gentle finesse and patience, they both go very far!

Here are some steps to keep showing your hair love:

1. After washing: Pat dry, avoid pulling the towel through your hair. Natural hair is very vulnerable during the wet stage.

2.Detangling hair: Whether your hair is wet or dry there is a method of detangling your hair to reduce the amount of hair breakage. This method is using a wide tooth comb and combing from the bottom through to the top. Never start from the top!

3. Condition: I know I may sound like a broken record, but conditioning and adding the right amount of moister to your hair will strengthen it and prevent dryness, breakage and spilt ends.

4. Wrap it up: Wrapping your hair in a silk, satin or even polyester scarf will protect your hair from drying and also maintain a hairstyle for a day or two. There are many attractive head scarfs out in the market at affordable prices.

With these basics, your hair will be healthier and better than ever!

Spray It To Life!

When your hair is dry, dull and even breaking, there is a way to bring it back to life and help the hair follicles to heal. Here are the key essentials that you will need to get started.

  1. Empty spray bottle: This can be brought from any beauty supply store and some convenient stores alike.
  2. Boil about 2 cups of water: This is to remove any impurities and even chemicals such as fluoride, and chlorine that are in the water. There are not high levels of these chemicals in our regular tap water but the small amount that is present can dry your hair somewhat. *Note: Depending on how large your spray bottle is, you may have some water left over. You can save it in another bottle or just toss it when you have used what you need.
  3. Have on hand some of your favorite essential oils. Recommended website for inspiration, knowledge and to buy oils (Silkyscents.com)
  4. Have on hand your favorite leave in (or) lightweight conditioner.

Steps:

  • After boiling the 2 cups of water, set aside and let cool. This may take a while so you might want to do it in advance. You can also put the hot water in a medium size bowl and fill a larger bowl with freezing ice water and insert the hot water bowl into the “cold bath” so to speak. This will make the cooling process go a lot quicker.
  • After the water is cool, fill the empty spray bottle ¾ way full with the now distilled (purified) water
  • Next, add 5-8 drops of your favorite oils. If it is Jojoba, Coconut, Olive oil or another carrier oil you may add 3-5 more drops of oil. Usually Rosemary, Basil and other potent oils will have a very strong fragrance and adding too much oil may cause an overwhelming smell. Sometimes less is more!

  • Finally, add some conditioner to the mix. This can be any conditioner of your choosing (brand name doesn’t matter). It should preferably be a leave in or a very light conditioner so that you will not have any buildup. Fill to the top of the spray bottle leaving about ½" or so room left.
  • When you finish adding all of the ingredients close the bottle and shake the entire mixer together.
Spray onto your hair and style as usual or try any of the natural styles posted on my previous blogs.

What is your favorite natural hair style?

Always love your Hair!
